Valence School is in the fortunate position of having an onsite Multi-Disciplinary Health Team. This team is made up of therapists and nurses employed by Kent Community Health NHS Trust and Valence School. They work together with the other School Teams to provide a holistic specialist service to the students.
The Health Team
The Health Team consists of Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Physiotherapists, a Physiotherapy Assistant and Wheelchair Technician, Occupational Therapists, an Occupational Therapy Technician, Speech & Language Therapists, a Dietitian and a Dietetic Assistant. All staff specialise in neuro-disability and have worked closely in a paediatric setting with children and their families.
Parents of boarding students are able to register their son/daughter with our local GP Service in Westerham. The designated GP is highly experienced at dealing with issues related to disability, as well as routine health care. A weekly surgery is held at Valence and appointments as needed can be booked at the Westerham Health Centre.
The Health Team works closely with school colleagues to ensure that the students receive individualised, high quality and imaginative care regardless of the extent of their disability. They strive to facilitate all students’ fullest access to the curriculum, health, fitness and social activities within a safe, positive and happy environment.
Valence students receive the very best support to enable them to participate in managing their disabilities and health care needs. The team prioritises working towards independence and supporting the students to make healthy lifestyle choices.
Training for Medical Needs
The Nursing Team runs an extensive training programme for school colleagues, supporting staff to train to deliver medication, support all the students’ nutritional needs and other health care interventions so that all medical and health care can be delivered safely and effectively in a family/ small group setting in a personalised and friendly environment.
Training for Therapy Needs
The Therapy Teams work closely with the school colleagues to deliver therapy programmes in a variety of ways within the class based curriculum or home living area (for residential students) minimising time lost from education and maximising joint outcomes. Independent mobility, communication and social interaction are at the core of our work. The Speech and Language, Occupational and Physiotherapy Teams work seamlessly with the Teaching and Support staff to ensure all students reach their full potential.
