Valence students tackle rugby taster session!

Valence students tackle rugby taster session!

On Friday 22nd April the Sports College welcomed Sevenoaks Rugby Club to our afternoon lessons. As part of our developing engagement with the local community the Sevenoaks under 15 girls team came along with their coaches to deliver some adapted rugby sessions.

We also gave a warm welcome to special guests from the Wooden Spoon, a charity who support disabled children through rugby.

We were also very fortunate to have a special guest attend the session, ex-Paralympian Andy Barrow. Now retired, Andy represented Great Britain at Wheelchair Rugby at three Paralympic games and is also a three time European gold medallist.

Students from classes D, U, T & N first took part in various warm up skills and activities, including moving with the ball, passing and tackling. Tackling was a particular favourite with some of our students, as our photos will highlight!

After practicing some of the basic skills our students worked in partnership with the girls in some fun games, including ‘Rob the nest’, with some of our older students displaying some more ‘unsportsman like’ tactical plans to win the games!!

The girls demonstrated another adapted game before mixing teams with our students to play together, resulting in many tries being scored!

Andy Barrow concluded the session and gave a fantastic speech on the values of hard work, determination and inclusion.

The Sports College have to thank everyone from Sevenoaks RFC, the Wooden Spoon and Andy Barrow for contributing to a great afternoon. We look forward to Sevenoaks RFC returning again to deliver some more rugby sessions for our eager students!
