PE Curriculum

All students are provided with a minimum of 3 hours challenging, adapted and modified high quality PE per week where they are inspired to:

Be Active, Enjoy and Achieve and where a Healthy Active Lifestyle and Competition are positively promoted.

Primary

4 hours PE per week to include swimming, rebound therapy, gymnastics, aesthetic activities, minor ball games and physical skills required for racing, throwing and jumping.

Our objectives for all Primary pupils are:-

  • Promote a FUN, BE ACTIVE ethos.
  • Provide various opportunities to explore movement.
  • Promote in students the desire to improve and achieve.
  • Allow pupils to think about what they are doing and make appropriate decisions.
  • Use the inter-house system to promote a competitive approach to participation.
  • Ensure safe practice during physical activity

Secondary

3 – 4 hours PE per week to include swimming, fitness, rebound therapy, multi skills related to ball games and inclusive sports with progression through to disability sport and athletics plus challenges linked to adventurous activities.  In 2016, adventurous sport included skiing and sailing.

  • To promote enjoyment and commitment to PE and School Sport.
  • To promote and maintain physical activity and well-being within school.
  • To develop a positive attitude and confidence to get involved.
  • To inspire students to participate in a range of activities.
  • To teach students physical skills and control.
  • To allow students to think about what they are doing and make appropriate decisions.
  • To develop stamina, suppleness and strength where appropriate.
  • To promote “Personal Bests” in all that students strive for, through competitive opportunities in class and through the inter-house system.
  • To ensure safe practice during physical activity.

Post 16

3 – 4 hours PE per week to include swimming, fitness, rebound therapy, multi skills related to ball games and inclusive sports with progression through to disability sport and athletics plus challenges linked to adventurous activities.  In 2016, adventurous sport included skiing and sailing.

  • To promote enjoyment and commitment to PE and School Sport.
  • To develop a positive attitude and confidence to get involved.
  • To promote participation in a range of activities.
  • To teach students physical skills and control.
  • To allow students to think about what they are doing and make appropriate decisions.
  • To promote stamina, suppleness and strength where appropriate.
  • To promote in students “Personal Bests in all they strive for.
  • To ensure safe practice during physical activity.

Further achievement and attainment is measured by awarded MERITS through the whole school inter-house system currently linked to the Spirit of the Games Values of Respect, Honesty, Passion, Teamwork, Self Belief and Determination led by the PE department.   

Accreditation

Some students in KS4 follow the WJEC Entry level PE award.  Additionally there is an option to turn this award into a certificate within Healthy Living and Fitness.
