Humanities at Valence
Humanities at Valence School incorporates Geography, History and Religious Education. The principle aims of the department are to inspire curiosity, provide understanding and experiences of our world and its past and develop understanding of beliefs and customs.

Key Stage 1

In Geography students will experience and learn:
- Geography skills
- Places knowledge, local, national and global scales
- Physical geography topics that vary from weather to the beach
- Human geography topics that vary from farming to shopping

In History students will experience and learn
- Changes in their lives
- British historical periods
- A significant individual in world history
- Local history

Key Stage 2

In Geography students will experience and learn
- Geography skills
- Places knowledge, local, national and global scales
- Physical geography topics that vary from volcanoes to ecosystems
- Human geography topics that vary from towns to food production

In History students will experience and learn:

- British historical periods from the stone-age to modern history
- Study of ancient civilisations including Ancient Greece
- A significant period in world history
- Local history

Key Stage 3

In Geography students will experience and learn:
- Geography skills
- Places knowledge, local, national and global scales
- Physical geography topics that vary from tectonic hazards to extreme climates
- Human geography topics that vary from tourism to land use

In History students will experience and learn:
- History skills including a topic on archaeology  
- British historical periods from the medieval period to present day
- A significant period in world history
- Local history

In Religious Education student will experience and learn:

- About the five major religions, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism
- From religion, such as topics on what influences us and respect for life

Through Key Stage 3 a number of field trips will be offered as a way to enhance the students’ skills and apply their classroom knowledge. Units may also be linked to current affairs to assist students understanding of what is going on in their world.

Key Stage 4 & 5

In Key Stage 4 and 5 students are offered the following courses;

- AQA Unit Award Scheme

- WJEC Entry Level Pathways

- WJEC GCSE Humanities (ending summer 2017)

- Edexcel GCSE History B

- AS Level courses (depending on GCSE grade)
