We're Outstanding - again!

Valence School’s residential provision has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted for the third year in a row!

25 April 2025 – Valence School is proud to announce that its residential provision has been rated Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted for the third consecutive year.  The recent social care inspection, carried out from 5–7 March 2025, resulted in no requirements or recommendations—highlighting the school’s continued excellence in supporting young people with complex medical needs and physical disabilities.

The boarding provision is designed to meet the needs of young people with significant physical disabilities and complex medical conditions, providing a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment that promotes independence and academic achievement.

The Ofsted report highlighted exceptional outcomes across three key inspection areas:

  • The overall experiences and progress of young people: Students make exceptional personal and academic progress, benefitting from strong, trusting relationships with staff and an environment tailored to their individual needs. Transitions in and out of boarding are student-led and well supported by families and professionals.
  • How well young people are helped and protected: Safeguarding is robust and embedded across all aspects of care and education. Students feel safe, respected, and listened to. Risk is carefully managed, and any concerns are swiftly addressed.
  • Effectiveness of leaders and managers: Leaders maintain high expectations and a shared vision that puts student wellbeing and progress at the heart of everything. Staff are well trained, supported, and proud to be part of the Valence team.

Valence’s Preparation for Adulthood programme was particularly praised for its impact on student confidence and life skills. Students access opportunities such as work experience and social activities while developing the tools needed for independence. The boarding provision also supports academic achievement by reducing the physical and emotional toll of daily travel and offering structured after-school study sessions and revision clubs alongside therapeutic and recreational activities.

Funded by Kent County Council, Valence School is a valued and unique resource that supports students from across Kent and neighbouring local authorities.

Matthew Strange, Principal of Valence School, commented:

“We are thrilled to receive our third consecutive Outstanding judgement. This achievement reflects the dedication of our staff and the incredible resilience and ambition of our students. Boarding at Valence isn’t just about care—it’s about enablement; ensuring our young people have the skills and ability to thrive, both now and in the future.”
